TOMS SHOES: Global Give Back
Blake Mycoskie, the founder of Toms Shoes, is a young American traveler who found that many children in Argentina had no shoes to protect their feet when he visited their country.
For most, shoes are a luxury that we don’t even think about, especially in the States where footwear have become more of a statement of style as opposed to a basic need. In some countries children can’t even attend school because shoes are a required part of their uniform. So if they don’t have shoes, they don’t go to school. If they don’t/can’t receive an education, they can’t/won’t have an opportunity to realize their potential. While this issue is also a leading cause of disease in underdeveloped countries because of soil transmitted diseases, which can penetrate the skin through the bare feet, we still don’t even consider how many people around the world don’t have access to the things we see as mere accessories.
Blake thought differently; he chose to take a stand and do something about this inequality, and thus created the Toms Shoes One for One Initiative. Through his innovative and well-thought out program, Blake found a way to match every pair of Toms shoes purchased with a new pair of shoes for a child in need. It’s a movement to be a part of, where you can be a do-gooder even as you shop. It also doesn’t hurt that the footwear on offer by Toms are extremely comfortable and their price point is super reasonable too. Expect to only spend between $44 – $98 USD for a cozy pair, while changing the lives of children all over the world.
